The month of April has been both challenging and exciting in moving a step ahead in the care of children and the care takers. Eye treatment for care takers facilitated: This month, two members of the grandparents care takers of children had successful cataract operation at Sankara eye hospital in Coimbatore . With the supportive hands of Sankara eye hospital, the two grandparents had the entire operation procedures free of cost. The ambience and the cordial treatment of the medical staff were well appreciated by the two grandparents. I am really happy to get my sight again, I had lost hopes when I joined a team of people from my village and went to a government hospital. All the people who had come along with me from the village ,had clear vision after the surgery ,but mine become complicated as eye infection developed and this resulted in me becoming totally helpless for a month. The old age pension scheme offered by the government to deserving has been channelized by Buds of Christ to support children under the care of grandparents. So far 15 families, grandparent-headed households are benefitted with the scheme. Though the amount ` 400 is a small amount, this plays a significant role in meeting some of the needs of the family. The benefit is seen vital for families who have no other means of support ·          For families working in unorganized sector, and daily wages ·          For people taking care of grandchildren In the case of Priya, an adolescent girl orphan, this benefit was more supportive, when her grandfather had to take rest due to eye operation and had no option to do any kind of work. This year World AIDS day themed “Lights for Rights”, was commemorated by Vetri Kootam (young children –advocacy group) with the support of Buds of Christ. It was organised in three villages and was unique as it was a partnership programme between the vetri kootam and community children in commemorating this day. In a village near Velakoundanpatti, the village community center (Anganwadi) was used to conduct the World AIDS day on 8th December 2010 .The group enacted  a small skit depicting, how a youngster can be easily influenced by peers and become vulnerable to HIV. The play also depicted the need to have the right information and being safe. Following the street-play, one representative organised a quiz competition and there was an awesome response.
